I joke that Matt Cutts was my first industry friend. Not to name drop but rather in the absurdity given how influential Matt is and was in the industry. I was at SMX Advanced in 2007, at the Google Dance. I saw Matt across the room talking to someone and he looked mildly distressed. One lady I met at the conference came with me to talk to him. We got his attention and he quietly thanked us for getting him out of the previous conversation.

Matt spent that whole night introducing me to people and genuinely being interested in what was going on in my world. The next day was the last day of the conference and I stopped by to say goodbye. Since that night, Matt has always been there for me for the random questions I've had. But really, just as a good friend to see once or twice a year to get a good hug from and check in quickly. Because let's be honest, it was hard to find him not cornered by 20+ people at conferences.

It always remains inspiring to see his dedication to doing the right thing, even when others were attacking him for things I am sure he couldn't control. Matt, you were and remain one of the most down to earth people I have met and thank you so much for all the help you have provided over the years. But more importantly, taking the time to hang out with a newb all those years ago.
