I originally 'met' Matt on Friendfeed. When we met in person he greeted me warmly as someone he knew. It wasn't something I expected and I'd be lying if I didn't say it made me feel good.

But he did that for A LOT of people. Over time I saw just how generous he was with his time. To this day I don't know how he had the patience to deal with the haters and conspiracy theorists.

I tried very hard not to bother Matt. I felt bad seeing that long line after every speaking engagement. I didn't want to pile on.

I did the same with my emails to him. I rarely reached out. But when I did he always responded. Well, until I asked a question he couldn't answer truthfully without revealing something and ... then he'd go silent.

One memory that stands out is a 2011 event at The Churchill Club featuring Matt, Amit Singhal and Ben Gomes. After the event Matt (and Danny) made sure I got to meet Amit. I don't exactly recall the specifics of that short conversation but the gist of it was that were happy to have people like me who provided a balanced opinion on their efforts.

That whole event was a bit of a turning point, confirming that I needed to trust myself and how I viewed the industry and to break through my introverted nature.

While I know Matt isn't gone, I do miss him being a part of our industry. But I am certain that the Digital Service is thrilled to have such a generous, smart and amiable colleague.

Be well Matt.
