Where do you start when talking about Matt. I've been in digital since 2005, many of us grew up to be smarter in digital because Matt was the first Google ambassador to really step out and help us understand. It all started with his low key, possibly whistle blower status posting in forums as "Google Guy" -- I had no idea who this Google guy was until he revealed himself. And when he did it was like Google allowing him to become the coolest digital personality ever. Even though I am hedrosexual, I developed an openly admitted "bromance" for a number of years. And even though Matt and I would mostly collide at conferences (I mean we did have a couple of exchanges on twitter over the years), he'd always take extra time -- even long after sessions ended to talk to myself and other hungry SEOs.
During the penguin era, I got a noogie from Matt and its captured on camera. One of my favorite presentations that I have given, was at Share 2012 explaining Panda and Penguin... I compared Matt to Anakin Skywalker - whom the galaxy loved until he turned on the Jedi acadmey (aka search community who adores Matt).
From my personal conversations, brief social media exchanges -- Matt genuinely cares about people, and helping others. In my experience, and those I know in the digital space, know i guy who not only spent tons of hours at Google improving search quality for Google users -- also took time to explain issues to webmasters, go off topic into more personal discussions and always humble enough to let himself be a part of a good laugh.
Much love to you M.C and thank you for helping us all seem and be smarter in life and profession by being transparent and vulnerable in sharing everything from your professional day to day to your personal challenges.
