I first came across Matt, as the infamous "Googleguy" on WMW and then Threadwatch. Many of us had handles back then, so this wasn't unusual. We'd analyse his responses forensically, trying to understand what was happening in the SERPs at the time. Although his answers were sometimes a little cryptic, they were so much better than radio silence from Google. As time went on, Matt was able to create more content, producing a video archive that is still referenced several years after he left the job. When I first met Matt at PubCon Vegas in 2006, I was shocked he knew who I was. You could see his commitment in the way he read our blogs, produced content and responded (gracefully) to comments - all on top of his day job. Although we may have been on different sides of some issues, looking back, we were incredibly lucky to have Matt in that role.
